Take teaching on the nutrition to rural areas

News emanating from National Assembly in Dodoma on Tuesday that Tanzania is third to Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) among African countries most hit by malnutrition is bad news indeed.

The Deputy Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Steven Kabwe, told the august House that 3,475,000 children in the country suffer from malnutrition. This is despite the fact that Tanzania has made striking progress in many health indicators over the past decade, except in nutritional status.

Statistics show that stunting currently affects 42 per cent of under five children, and is only two percent lower than it was five years ago. Child underweight, at 16 percent, also remains at unacceptable levels. And, as if this was not bad enough, the country was not on track to achieve the MDG 1 target to reduce underweight by one-half by this year (2015). See More
